Who are Virgil and Louise Phelps
My (John with an H) grandparents were amazing people with incredibly generous hearts. They donated to various charitable causes over the years, often anonymously, but North Kent Connect always held a special place in their hearts. A lifelong businessman, Virgil helped to start and manage our family business (Reliance Finishing) successfully for more than 40 years, providing my family with opportunities we otherwise would not have had. Jon and I bought Tris4Health after he retired, but his fascination with business never left. It always blew his mind that putting on races was an actual paying job. After every race, my first call while driving home was to my grandfather to discuss how it went. Not a day goes by that I don't think about the two of them.
If you're a fan of The Office, you know that Michael's fun run included the phrase "Meredith Palmer Memorial" in the name. My grandparents had a fantastic sense of humor, and the thought of adding their names to the race would have put a smile on their faces. So, while the name of this event might be ridiculous, the thought and love behind it are not. You can learn more about them by viewing the video below, where my Aunt Karen discusses their impact on North Kent Connect.
